Brooklyn-based furniture retailer says that home is where the heart is and says that, when redecorating, homeowners should follow their heart.

According to Yankovskiy, owner of United Furniture Group, a Brooklyn-based furniture retailer that sells brand name furniture at rock-bottom prices both at its New York store and online, people that don’t feel at home within their own living space cannot really call that space their home.

“There is a misconception that if a homeowner purchases trendy accessories, buys the best designer furniture and follows the newest lifestyle trends, they will be comfortable in their home,” says Yankovskiy. “Unfortunately, when decorating a home, those occupying the space should purchase items based on their own personal tastes, rather than following the latest trends.”

When decorating, Yankovskiy says it is all about following the heart, because only the homeowner knows what styles and colors will make them happy.

“A good way to start a redecorating plan is to photograph the apartment or home,” says Yankovskiy. “Look at the pictures and envision how it might look with different furniture, colors or styles that are under consideration. If you can picture it and you like the way it looks, chances are you will be comfortable.”

Another good idea, according to Yankovskiy, is to prepare a list of all of the furniture within the home.

“Think about each piece and ask yourself if you still love it,” he explains. “Ask yourself if it is still functional and necessary. This will help to identify extraneous objects. Often, furniture and accessories that might have once been useful are now accumulating and may not fit into one’s current stage in life.”

Yankovskiy notes that everyone’s life changes over time and the home has to change as well. Even if a designer lamp was expensive to purchase, when it no longer fits into a home’s decor, he suggests either getting rid of it or putting it into storage.
